SAND Number: SAND2012-4053P
Presenter(s): Lyndon Pierson, Trent Jaeger, Bruce McMillin, Paul Gratz and Ryan Kastner
Description: Using smart meters as a motivating engineering challenge. This session will consider how smart meters could be designed to provide robust authentication of access control to prevent an electrical "denial of service" attack. Participants will be given additional background before the workshop outlining desired functional requirements and perceived engineering challenges related to how a very inexpensive, mass-produced secure smart meter could be designed and validated drawing largely on untrusted commercial components. What are the existing security approaches, architectures, and technologies that could be applied? And the remaining research gaps? Would this problem be a good candidate for a national (or global) prize-based design competition?

B&MSSS: New Phylogenetic Placement and Taxon Identification Methods for Metagenomic Data - Jul. 2012
SAND Number: SAND2012-3307P
Internal Release Only
Presenter: Dr. Tandy Warnow
Bioscience/Material Science Speaker Series (B&MSSS)
Phylogenetic placement arises in the analysis of metagenomic data, in which the objective is to insert short molecular sequences (called "query sequences") into an existing phylogenetic tree and alignment on full-length sequences for the same gene. We present SEPP, a general ``boosting" technique to improve the accuracy and/or speed of phylogenetic placement techniques. The key algorithmic aspect of SEPP is a dataset decomposition technique in SATe (Liu et al., Science 2009 and Systematic Biology (in press), a method that utilizes an iterative divide-and-conquer technique to co-estimate alignments and trees on large molecular sequence datasets. We show that SEPP improves current phylogenetic placement methods, placing metagenomic sequences more accurately when the set of input sequences has a large evolutionary diameter and produces placements of comparable accuracy in a fraction of the time for easier cases. We then show that a combination of Metaphyler (Liu et al, BMC Genomics 2011) and SEPP produces dramatically improved accuracy over all current taxon identification methods.

Giant Impacts: The Key to Unlocking the Mysteries of the Moon and Mercury - Jul. 2012
SAND Number: SAND2012-5149P
Presenter: Professor Sarah Stewart
During the end stage of accretion, giant impacts leave an indelible mark on the final physical and dynamical properties of a terrestrial planet. Giant impacts are invoked to explain the large core of Mercury, the retrograde spin of Venus, the crustal thickness asymmetries on the Moon and Mars, and the origin of the moons around Earth and Pluto. The diversity of features arises from the large range of impact outcomes encountered during the end stage of planet formation. Using recent results on the dynamics and thermodynamics of giant impacts, I will describe their effects on the physical properties of the final planets and address the current debates on the origin of the Moon and Mercury.

Knowledge Management at NASA: Case Studies and Lessons Learned - Apr. 2015
SAND Number: SAND2015-3572V
Presenter: Dr. Ed Rogers, Chief Knowledge Officer NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and David Oberhettinger, Chief Knowledge Officer NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
Shortly after 9:00am on February 1st, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart during re-entry and the seven astronauts on board perished. In the accident investigation report it was stated that, “NASA …has not demonstrated the characteristics of a learning organization.” This statement caused considerable consternation and thinking inside NASA. Dr. Ed Rogers was hired that same year as Chief Knowledge Officer to help the Goddard Space Flight Center become the kind of learning organization that doesn’t repeat mistakes. In this two-part story-telling presentation, Dr. Rogers will share the highlights of what he learned about how to change the way an organization like NASA thinks about learning. He’ll share his journey and the simple principles and practices he made use of along the way.
Our second speaker, David Oberhettinger, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) and LLC Chair, will discuss lesson learned best practices. For example, NASA components like the “sky crane” that landed Mars Science Laboratory in 2012 must be very robust, but the high risk associated with one-of-a-kind, never-before-flown spacecraft means that hardware and software faults are inevitable. In this inherently risky business, it behooves us to make “new” mistakes and to avoid repeating known errors with these national assets.
JPL “infuses” each lesson learned into our two primary “engineering bibles” so an organization is not dependent on the key person reading the lesson at the key point in the project lifecycle. A formal lessons learned process is a hallmark of a mature engineering organization. The NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has a Lessons Learned Committee (LLC) that has met weekly since 1984 to evaluate lesson learned candidates and prepare lesson learned for publication in the NASA repository.

PRess/PD2P: Fascinating Foam - Diverse Applications, Unexpected Properties, and Characterization Challenges - Sep. 2009
SAND Number: SAND2010-1888P
Presenter: Jaime M. Kropka
Postdoctoral Professional Development Program (PD2P)
Foam pervades our everyday lives: we use it to bathe and shave, it floats atop our beer, cappuccino and pie, and it can even infect our bodies in the form of viruses. Although we are able to manipulate foam in these and many other common practices, there is still much we do not know about this fascinatingly complex material. In this talk, some of the intriguing aspects of foam, which could not be predicted based on its constituent components, will be discussed. Some challenging aspects of foam characterization, which have impeded the development of a thorough understanding of the material despite over a century of investigations, will also be presented. Despite these challenges, there are some known aspects of foams and these will be outlined along with how today’s modern tools are being utilized to tell us more about foam structure and dynamics. A brief introduction to Sandia’s interest in foams will then be given, and some of the current research we are conducting to further those interests will be discussed. This work is focused on the preparation of “model” organic foams for use in developing an understanding of how to tune their stability and rheological response. Finally, physical and chemical methods to stabilize the foam will be described and possible new directions for the work will be presented.

PReSS/PD2P: Using Surface Science to Probe Critical Interfaces in Organic and Hybrid Systems - Mar. 2010
SAND Number: SAND2010-1887P
Presenter: Michael Brumbach
Postdoctoral Professional Development Program (PD2P)
This talk will address several uses of surface science for understanding critical interfaces in energy-related devices and for materials characterization. Primary emphasis will be on photoelectron spectroscopy applied to understanding interfaces in organic photovoltaics (OPV). In organic photovoltaics, where solar-to-electric conversion efficiencies are typically low, interfacial phenomena dictate the performance of the solar cell. It is therefore important to understand the interfacial chemistry and energy level alignment at these interfaces to better optimize them for increased PV performance. UV-photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS/XPS) are ideally suited to examine these interfaces. Several examples of interfacial energy level alignments will be discussed. More general applications of surface science will also be discussed including work from a collaborative effort at the National Synchrotron Light Source where NEXAFS, imaging NEXAFS, and variable energy XPS have been used for a variety of applications.

The Challenger Accident: Timeless Lessons in Engineering - Feb. 2012
SAND Number: SAND2012-0521P
The Challenger Accident occurred on Space Shuttle program's 25th mission in 1986. Although the tragic end to the "teacher in space" mission happened over 25 year ago, many of the lessons learned from this event are just as relevant today as they were when identified following the investigation performed by the President Reagan appointed accident investigation commission. Additionally, many new lessons emerged several years after the accident as a result of studies examining contributing causes and cultural factors.

Truman Lecture Series: Re-Engineering the Engineering Education - May 2008
Sand Number: SAND2008-2498P
Responding to a bipartisan request of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, the national Academies conducted an assessment of America’s competitive position in the emerging global economy. The effort, known as the Gathering Storm study, concluded that America’s ability to compete for jobs in the future and its ability to meet many of the challenges confronting the nation will be highly dependent upon the country’s prowess in science and engineering.
It is the contention of our speaker, Norm Augustine, that the rapidly evolving environment affecting the nation and the engineering profession demands significant changes in the manner in which engineers are educated. Many of these changes will run contrary to the historical context in which engineers have been produced and are not without controversy. The pros and cons of one set of proposed changes will be discussed.
